I hate the dictator and mass murderer and I'm glad he's dead, but the cause of liberty is not served by propaganda, even from as august an institution as the NYT.
His last words were actually the Islamic prayer "there is no god but God and Muhammad is his messenger." He managed to repeat it one and a half times before the actual moment of hanging cut him off.

I also saw this referred to at other places online. I noticed that there were at least three versions of the "last words" going around, and did some extra digging.
Haddad seems to think that Saddam was not entirely serious about the prayer recitation. I don't find that too unlikely actually.
