I find it endearing, much like preferring wooden pencils to mechanical ones, or people who have their shoelaces perpetually untied. So does David Foster Wallace (from whom, in fact, I go it). I suppose it might come off snooty, but then again, if people hate me because I choose "&c." over "etc." I suppose there's very little I could have done to make them like me in the first place. :)
