Perestroika

Political Scientist/Bloggers Dan Drezner and Chris Lawrence both have further thoughts about Jacob Levy's surprising tenure denial and the anti-pluralist turn at Chicago's political science department. Levy himself emerges repeatedly in Drezner's comments, although now that he has returned to his own blog I feel sillier clocking his every internet move.

Jacob Levy emerges from his hiatus once again to post his thoughts on the nomination of Harriet Miers. Listening to C-Span all day, I continue to think that she will be confirmed by the end of November. For better or worse.

A different kind of Levywatch

Jacob Levy, in the comments at Crooked Timber, discusses Amnesty International and the costs of confusing Gitmo with the Gulags.

Normally I use these posts only to hound Professor Jacob Levy in his appearance in comments throughout the blogosphere (both as a public service to those who, like me, were sucked into blogging by him in the first place, and as a not-so-subtle method of teasing). But via Lawrence Solum I see that Professor Levy has two new papers on SSRN, one about the Small Republic thesis and the other about loyalty and federalism. I suppose this is his alibi for what he has been doing with his time instead of blogging.

Jacob Levy commented on my post yesterday about DC bookstores (with the depressing claim that Second Story books and Kramerbooks are as good as it gets).

Angus asked me whether this fact deserved a post of its own, and then asked what would happen if Professor Levy were to comment on this post-- would he be able to make Levywatches propagate down the blog in an endless recursion?

I've opened comments, but only for Professor Levy.

I read the comments section at Kevin Drum's otherwise good blog only as an exercise of the triumph of hope over experience. Nonetheless, just as Dan Drezner is taking a spin posting there, Jacob Levy can be found mired in the comment-muck.

See, e.g., this comment about unjust tax rates.

UPDATE: contrary to my own instincts (but in line with the sharp-eyed Phoebe Maltz's) Professor Levy can also be found in the comments to Phoebe's blog applying the principle of bedikat chametz to laptop keyboards.

More Levy

Jacob Levy goes on (at length) about the philosophy of book-organization here. Our philosophies are almost identical except that his seems to be much more complete than mine. Then again, it sounds like he has between 4-12 times as many books as I do, and his are divided between home and office (mine are divided between my apartment and the closet of my bedroom in Indiana).

Jacob Levy can also be found in the comments at Political Arguments discussing the "Thou shalt not quote" commandments.

Yes, I've been spending more time lately tracking down Jacob Levy's posts in comments than producing original material. I blame tax class, and also a distracting raft of articles by David Currie, assorted greats in the Harvard Law Review, and an article by Michael Stokes Paulsen I re-read about why the current Congress is under an obligation to right now call for a Constitutional convention.

At any rate, Jacob Levy compares the Weekly Standard to the National Review here. Some of us hope he will get tenure already so that (maybe?) he will return to full-scale blogging.

Levy on plagiarism

Jacob Levy appears in Heidi Bond's comments to condemn plagiarism and disagree with one "Listless Lawyer," who appears not only there but in Amber Taylor's comments, urging both of them to stop using Laura K Pahl's name in discussing her alleged plagiarism (and over at his own blog where he and I are going several rounds about the difference between correlation and causation). The usual caveat-- many skeptical readers point out that this story may yet prove to be false, an effort to drum up links or to tar the name of some innocent. By now, it is April 1 somewhere in the world.

But at any rate, I agree with Professor Levy and not the Listless Lawyer. Plagiarism is wrong and plagiarists have no particular right to keep their misdeeds secret. This isn't because plagiarists should be considered irredeemable, but because, as Washingtonienne would have it, "people should be responsible for the shit they pull."

Snubbed [and Levywatch]

The 77th Academy Award nominees are out, and they are more nonsensical than usual. The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the best movie of the year, received nominations only for best actress and best screenplay (!), none for (say) its cinematography, directing, or it self. Also, Liam Neeson's strong performance in Kinsey has been ignored in favor of luminaries like Leonardo DiCaprio and (dare to dream) Johnny Depp. Indeed, Eternal Sunshine's two nominations at least beat out Kinsey's one.

Not that one should demand reasonableness from the Oscars or anything, but...

UPDATE: Jacob Levy's thoughts on the matter appear in the comments to this post by Dan Drezner.
