The Mystery of Airport Capital

Now that so many people in airports can be expected to have and use laptops, and airports obviously seem prepared to respond to this (witness the free or for-sale Wifi in so many airports), when will the same shift happen with respect to the power outlets needed for those of us who wish to use our computers during a long airport stay and still have it working on the flight?

I've spent the past 20 minutes prowling around the airport looking for a power outlet-- there are a few scattered here and there (frequently not near the seats one might want to sit in to use one) but they're all taken, and there are now a few people circling around me and the outlet I found hidden behind a chair, clearly eager for me to stop using it so they can pounce.

So why isn't it worth it to either add a bunch more outlets, or to at least start charging for, and therefore rationing, the ones they have? Of course, the smart reader will just respond by asking me why I don't fly with a plug-splitting extension cord.
