Babel

I saw Babel last night (not to be confused with Baabul, which I saw advertised in the hallway of the theater) and am of two minds about it. On the one hand, the movie was "well done"-- the acting is good, the music and cinematography are compelling, and the movie definitely moved me.

On the other hand, the emotion it moved me to was a combination of despair, loss, and loathing-- like reading Kazuo Ishiguro's The Unconsoled, only even less pleasant. My sister and I used to argue a lot about movies that aroused negative emotions (especially seemingly "cheap" or uncomplicated negative emotions). I thought they were great-- I'd rather feel something bad than nothing at all-- while she hated being emotionally manipulated. As I get (a little bit) older, I am starting to come around to her view.
