X-Men 3: The Last Stand
I saw the third X-Men movie this evening. [Spoilers inevitably ensue, probably also in the comments.]
I thought it was very, very good. My girlfriend also liked it, but thought that it wasn't as good as either of the first two were. But even she was so shocked by the takedown of Magneto that she kept her hand over her mouth until the end of the movie. We also disagreed over whether it would have been superior to have Phoenix/Grey kill herself, per the comics. I say no-- given the movies' focus on the Wolverine/Jean Grey romance, having him kill the woman he loves is really the only acceptable denoument. (C.f. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 2). I take no view on whether it would have been better to portray Phoenix as cosmic/alien force rather than as id.
Now, I will grant that moving the Golden Gate bridge teetered on the border between cool and very cheesy, and also that the movie had to polish off a lot off plot arcs in order to get the emotional rise a third time. Then again-- we didn't stay until the credits were over, so we missed the final "Professor X lives" scene, which really seems obvious in retrospect, but somehow surprised me nonetheless. That makes the potential for a sequel much greater, copyright fights pending.
One final question for those who have seen the movie. At the end, when Magneto is sitting by his chess board in Golden Gate Park, does he telekinetically move a piece? There is a disagreement among observers.
