Blogs and Fads

I spent Sunday with a friend whose blog is suffering from a lack of content even greater than this one's. She suggested that this proved that blogs may be a fad after all. Upon reflection, I think not. Anecdotally it seems to me that the problem is not that there aren't lots of blogs with lots of content out there, just that those blogs aren't the same ones as they were one or three years ago. And for student blogs, like hers and mine, this is particularly likely to happen as we progress from stages of life and education where we are loafing around all the time or longing for people to talk to and develop new ways to spend our time, whether reading constitutional law recreationally or playing foosball.

But that suggests that blogs, like so many other things, are subject to the principles of creative destruction, and that lives move on. If I'm fortunate enough to get certain kinds of post-graduation employment, it may result in a total leave of absence from blogging for a year or two or three. But we are a long way, as Sudeep would say, from the one-fives.
